    Letter from the President

University of Mississippi Association of Black Journalists

    Welcome back, UMABJ family.

I hope each of you made it through Winter Storm Fern safely. The ice, the road conditions, the power outages across North Mississippi made the start of this semester feel uncertain for a moment. I am grateful that we are able to return to campus safely and continue the work ahead of us. More than anything, I hope you and your loved ones are well.

Experiences like this remind us how important community truly is. Checking in on one another. Sharing information. Making sure no one feels alone during moments of disruption. That same sense of care and connection is what I want UMABJ to carry forward this semester.

As journalists, our voices matter deeply, especially in moments that impact our communities directly. The way we report, document, and frame stories shapes understanding. Whether we are covering campus life, local issues in Oxford, or broader conversations affecting our state, our perspectives bring necessary depth and accountability to the field.

This semester, I hope UMABJ continues to be a space where you feel supported, empowered, and challenged to grow. Whether you are a freshman just getting involved for the first time or a senior preparing for graduation, your presence in this organization is intentional and valuable.

I am excited about what we will build together in the months ahead. Let’s stay safe, stay engaged, and continue telling stories that matter.

    With appreciation,
    Lauren Hite
    President, UMABJ
