The Black Student Union hosted their first ever fashion show!
On Friday, October 24, 2025, the University of Mississippi’s Black Student Union hosted its first-ever Fashion Show, presented in collaboration with the UM Gospel Choir and MOX.
The show, aptly titled “The IAMBSU,” was designed to be a bold celebration of identity, creativity, and community—an opportunity for the students of Ole Miss to see who BSU truly is.
From playful, expressive outfits to bold, unconventional looks, participants used fashion not only to showcase their individual style but also to honor and highlight the legacy of Black fashion in America.
Tickets were sold for only two dollars, to encourage students to show up and support, and that they did. With an overfull room, there was much laughter, cheering, and congregation to be had.
In between the two segments of the show, students had the opportunity to go see and buy from vendors of local students, supporting many local black businesses.
Se’Marje McGregory, a student her at the University and a member of BFS, explains how “the IAMBSU Fashion Show was our declaration to the world- a reminder that we, as African Americans, have always been doing great things, are still doing great things, and will keep pushing the bar higher every time.”
For him, it was a space where he could show up as his true authentic self unapologetically in a world that constantly tries to dim light.
McGregory’s favorite part of the show was seeing everybody have fun. “All the running around, all the late nights, all the chaos- it all felt worth it. In that moment I realized that we created more than just a show, but a space where we really honed in on that #blackgirlmagic and #blackboyjoy moment.
Ultimately, the IAMBSU Fashion Show proved to be far more than a creative showcase. It was a powerful affirmation of culture, confidence, and community. Through fashion, music, and shared celebration, BSU succeeded in creating a space where Black expression was not only welcomed but uplifted.
