Why Movie Theaters Are Still Struggling to Win Back Young Audiences

By: Sharria Bonner

Movie theaters still have a hard time luring youthful viewers back to theaters, even with blockbuster releases and luxurious seating enhancements.Theaters were a known hangout spot for teenagers and college students prior to the pandemic. Many expectations have changed everywhere as a result of streaming services. Within weeks of their debut, movies may be found at home, frequently for less money than a single theater ticket.Price increases haven’t been beneficial. Nowadays, the typical movie ticket in the United States costs over $12, and a night out can cost much more due to food. For many students, going to the movies is more of an occasional treat than a regular habit because of the cost.Another important factor is convenience. Watching with friends, pausing, and multitasking are all made possible by streaming. Theaters can seem constrictive to a generation used to on demand media.Theaters are still relevant, though. Big budget movies and collective audience responses are still unmatched by streaming. It’s unclear if that will be sufficient to restore regular attendance among young viewers. For the time being, theaters thrive on event movies and moviegoers who are prepared to get up from their couches for something worthwhile.
