The Network: Black History Month at the Flagship

As February continues, Black History Month is in full effect! This month is a time for unity, celebration, and collaboration as we honor the Black community’s achievements, culture, and resilience.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen an incredible start to the celebration with events hosted by various culturally based organizations:
NAACP Week Feb 9th-15th
The University of Mississippi’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is dedicated to advocating for social justice, fostering meaningful discussions on racial and political issues, and empowering minority students through activism, education, and community engagement.
Their week was largely successful. It was a week filled with programming designed to engage students in the LOU community. The staple event, Buy the Block, hosted over 10 vendors, small businesses, and organizations.

The Black Student Union’s 12th annual gala is a night dedicated to celebrating Black excellence, culture, and creativity.
African American Studies Department – Open Mic Night
February 26, 6:00 PM
Luckyday Cafeteria, University of Mississippi
The University of Mississippi’s African American Studies Department invites students and faculty to join in celebrating Black History Month at Open Mic Night on Wednesday, February 26. This even offers a welcoming space for attendees to share poetry, spoken word, music, and personal reflections. Hosted by Fatimah Weasley, the evening will feature free snacks and beverages for all guests.
